Hardrock Striker - Kick Out the 12's (Skylax story part I)

A une époque pas si lointaine ? c’était avant DFA ou 2 Many DJ’s : une préhistoire ? où le rock et l’electro se méprisaient ou s’ignoraient, le label parisien Skylax fut parmi les premiers à organiser des rendez-vous borgnes, torrides et féconds entre les deux (faux) frères ennemis. Ici, le rock le plus sombre et enragé (des Stooges à Joy Division) redécouvrait la débauche et l'euphorie du dance-floor, sur des maxis qui ont depuis fait le tour du monde dans des sacs de DJ cabossés et crevards. C'est justement une poignée de ces maxis que le label d'Hardrock Striker compile aujourd'hui, sous un titre rendant hommage à Detroit : au MC5, bien sûr, pour cette électricité mauvaise et crasseuse ; mais aussi aux pionniers de la techno, pour leur sensuelle brutalité, leur minimalisme tapageur. C'est Detroit, ç'aurait pu être Madchester, Chicago ou le New York du Studio 54 (Tony Sylvester), tant ces maxis robotiques sentent le stupre, la sueur, l'hédonisme insouciant. Car chez Skylax, les Protools finissent en nage, les synthés font du larsen, les beatbox des solos possédés : derrière les machines, il y a des hommes, et ils sont nettement plus rock'n'roll que tant de gommeux en déguisement Doherty/Strokes. On n'appelle pas impunément Metallika une impitoyable tranche de bamboche, comme on ne détourne pas sans un goût très sûr le mémorable Disco Circus de Martin Circus qui inventait il y a trente ans LCD Soundsystem. (JD Beauvallet / Les Inrockuptibles / 2007)

At a time not so distant ? It was before DFA or 2 Many DJ's : a prehistory ? Where rock and electro despised or ignored each other, the parisian label Skylax was among the first to organize one-eyed, scorching and fruitful meetings between the two false brothers. Here, the darkest and rabid rock (from the Stooges to Joy Division) rediscovered the debauchery and euphoria of the dancefloor, on some 12 inches that have since toured the world in battered DJ bags and crackers. It is precisely a handful of these 12 inches that Hardrock Striker's label compiled today, under a title paying homage to Detroit, to the MC5 of course for this bad and flithy electricity ; but also to the pioneers of techno, for their sensual brutality, their rowdy minimalism. It's Detroit, it could have been Madchester, Chicago or the New York of Studio 54 (Tony Sylvester), so much these robotic 12 inches feel the stupor, the sweat, the carefree hedonism. Because at Skylax, the protools end up swimming, the synths feedback, the betaboxes of the solos possessed : behind the machines, there are men, and they are clearly more rock'n'roll than so many gummies in Doherty - Strokes disguise. We do not call Metallika a ruthless slice of bamboo with impunity, as we do not divert without a very sure taste the memorable Disco Circus of Martin Circus which invented LCD Soundsystem thirty years ago. (JD Beauvallet / Les Inrockuptibles / 2007)
